The Web Less Traveled: Interesting location from Lee County Schools contains links to unusual sources of information. Much of it runs down urban myths and helps students separate fact from fiction on the Web. http://www.lee.k12.fl.us/dept/SDC/webless/

Tales of the Wooden Spoon: Another site that debunks cyber fiction including the alleged list of "Life Lessons" wrongly attributed to Bill (Microsoft) Gates. Actually shows sources and attributions. Some librarians love this kind of stuff. Where else can you find the origin of the expression "dead ringer" or "saved by the bell?" Not to mention why the thing at the base of a doorway is called a threshold.

Gopher Sites Computing History

Does anybody still use Gopher Sites? Guess not. This is a techno historical area now. Before the Internet went graphical in about 1993 most directories of topics and links were in Gopher Sites. These text only sites were early attempts to organize Internet information by site topics and directories within sites. Searches were named after Archie comic characters (I couldn't make this up, really). Searches were called Veronica and Archie searches and determined how and what kind of topics were being searched. The need for Gophers was eliminated in the '90s as graphical browsers and various underlying elements like Spiders and Bots made cataloging the Internet easier. But even in the early '00s it is estimated that only about 16% of Internet resources are searchable by the general public with conventional search engines. Much more is still available on Gopher Sites.
